What a busy first week…..
On the bowling schedule this week for Wadebridge were the Camel Cup, Ladies’ home and away Rippon matches, Men’s A team away and mixed ECBL away. Our team captains summed up the results.
Camel Cup v Bodmin (first leg)
The Camel Cup is a new tournament played between Wadebridge and Bodmin. Six triples came away with an 18 shot win at Bodmin on Monday 27th April, which we will have to defend at home in September in the second leg to retain the trophy, won for the first time last year.
ECBL Team v Liskeard – Paul Evans (C)
Wednesday 29th, we returned to ECBL action away to Liskeard in our first league fixture as last season’s champions. A comprehensive victory saw the Bridgers win 82-56, 5-2 on points. Well done to Iris Richards and Di Dingle playing in their first game. A great start to the season! Thank you to our travelling supporters, Iris D & Penny.
Rippon Green team (A) v Bude
Di Dingle, Lorraine Davies, Iris Richards & Pat Archer (C)
The match against Bude on 30th April was a ‘game of two halves’. We started playing on a wet slower green after heavy rain with ominous black clouds gathering around us and a strong cross wind. Then the sun came out and the green got faster. Still not much turn with our woods but the same for everyone. All in all a very pleasant game despite losing 12-24 against a strong Bude team. Well played one and all. A good second match of the season
Rippon Yellow team (B) v Kensey Vale
Avril Starling, Mae Bargate, Kirsty Jones & Jane Fernley (C)
30th April, Rippon B played their first away match of the season. The team had a tough battle against a strong Kensey Vale team who won 21-17. Great match and we now look forward to taking on Dunheved next week.
Men’s A Team v Bodmin – Richard Jones (C)
30th April. A very close overall game at our near neighbours going down to the last end on a very April like green. A win for Bodmin 49-54 and 1-4 in points.
P Woodley , P Richards , K Dodd, G Tinker 11 – 18.
D Joseph, J Joseph, D Morrison , C Joseph 16-26.
D Grant, P Evans , K Jones , R Jones 22-10
In addition, David Grant, Peter Woodley, Kevin Jones and Richard Jones won a first round of county Senior 4’s against a Bodmin rink, whilst after a good start, Terry Darby, Graham Browning, Keith Dodd and David Bramman came second best to another Bodmin rink in the same competition. Jane Fearnley, Kevin Jones and Richard Jones won their county mixed triples against a Dunheved triple.
Away from cutthroat competition, there was also a great turnout for Club Night – 18 members playing in the Umbrella and 10 new members there for coaching. Camelford ladies returned to Wadebridge for a friendly. Two triples and a rink were played with some Wadebridge ladies playing for Camelford to help make up numbers. A win for the “Wadebridge” ladies who then hosted a very enjoyable evening supper. The two friendlies on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd were both affected by rain. Saturday afternoon’s downpour caused a premature end and an early tea in the match against Truro. On Sunday, Wadebridge and North Tawton managed about 12 ends before the thunderous deluge forced them indoors. Bowlers’ Tea was taken (a magnificent spread by the catering team) while the rain ended and the green drained (thanks to sterling work by the green team over several years), enabling the match to finish (78-67 to Wadebridge).
