Having kicked off the season with a cold Opening Day and a wondrously sunny Taster Weekend, the Club got into action with some real matches.
The Camel Cup is a new competition arranged by George Tinker in which Wadebridge and Bodmin play each other twice, at beginning and end of season, with a magnificent cup going to the winners on overall score across both matches. Sadly, it got off to a stuttering start when Bodmin advertised the match as a friendly and didn’t get the six triples needed. So it was played as a friendly, in conditions that can be described, at best as damp and drizzly.
A friendly the next day against Dunheved involved four of our new members, who performed very creditably. We’re sure that other new members will be able to make a good contribution in future matches too. (The next friendlies are on Sunday 5th and 12th, both at home. Team selections have now been made for these. The next after that is on Sunday 26th May. Get your names down on the list in the clubhouse — give our captains the enjoyable problem of having to make a selection rather than phone round to see who can make up the numbers.)
The Ladies have played two league matches: a Tamar at Torpoint which we won 18-12 and a Rippon at home to Liskeard, won 17-16 after a stunning final shot by skip Mae Bargate. What a great start in both leagues!
The B Team’s first match, away at Dunheved, was rained off. A strong team was selected for the first ECBL match (4 triples) that Wadebridge has played in decades, resulting in a 7-0 victory over Callington. The team for next week has already been selected, but the idea is to widen the scope of selections to give more competitive games to more people. The A Team, also away at Dunheved, had a convincing win 5-0. Harry Tinker’s rink won 22-5, George Tinker 20-17 and Richard Jones 26-8.
Let’s hope we can continue in this vein for all our competitions
