Brilliant sunshine and an excellent offer drew best ever crowds to Wadebridge Bowling Club last Saturday and Sunday for Taster Weekend.

Taster Day 2024

41 people came to try bowls, and 19 of them enjoyed their session enough to sign up on the spot for a year’s subscription, at the cheap rate of £25 (or free for juniors). The others took away the forms and we may see them again at Club Nights. Or not, of course.

The year’s subscription gives members access to the club at any time, with the green being open to play from 10am until dusk — no extra green fees! New members also get a free copy of our Centenary book. (One day we’ll use up the over-printing…)

The first person arrived promptly at 10 o’clock on Saturday morning, with more rapidly following. By 10:30, all six rinks were occupied. Fortunately we had tea, coffee, biscuits and friendly chat available for the next arrivals while they waited for a vacant slot.

It kept on like that all through the morning. Coach Kevin Jones didn’t get a chance to eat his sandwich until he put his foot down and refused to come out of the clubhouse.

Sunday was a bit slower. At five past ten, we were wondering where everyone had got to, and several members began impromptu roll-ups. But people did start coming through the gates, and though it was never quite as busy as Saturday, there was a steady flow, including a couple of people who popped in after a session at the tennis club next door.

All in all, a very successful weekend, and a very enjoyable one.
