Wadebridge B kicked off on Monday with a resounding 5-0 win over Dunheved B (63-29). This was followed by a great victory for our ECBL team at Kensey Vale on Wednesday: 78-39 and 6 points in the bag. Our thanks to the reserves that stepped up to help out in the ECBL.
The C and A Teams didn’t have league matches this week, but Friday saw the two knockout-out competitions take place. Due to numerous absences from the A Team for the Croydon Marks away to Stratton, they had to call up numerous B Team players. In turn, the B Team called upon C Team regulars for the Jimmy Hopper match at home to Dunheved (again).
Stern warnings were given to the B Team that they had to stay around until the entire match had finished, in case of needing extra ends. They weren’t. Wadebridge won 58-36.75 (the peculiar score due to Dunheved being a man short), thanks primarily to the rink of Peters Stone, Keat and French, and skip Andy Jones.
It was another story at Stratton. After 54 ends (that’s 18 for each rink, for the hard-of-maths) the match was tied 52-52. Squeaky bum time! At 9.10pm everyone came back out to play an extra end and Wadebridge prevailed by 3 shots, 58-55.
Two great wins for supposedly weakened teams, and a demonstration of our strength in depth. At the beginning of the season, when we were struggling to find complete B and C teams for league matches on the same night, and the C Team contained players who started playing barely weeks earlier, you would not have thought that possible. Indeed, some were saying we shouldn’t persist with the C Team. But by taking the risk, we now have three really good teams. Competition for places in next year’s teams will be great!
