Recently, the club received a grant from the WREN St Breock Wind Farm community fund to pay for battery powered tools — ecological, sustainable and quiet. A deputation from the Green Team (Andrew Phillips, Iris Richards, Peter Richards) made the trip to Cornwall Farm Machinery to get them.
As David Atfield, who made the grant application, said in his thank-you email to WREN: “The equipment is already in use and the club’s 'green army’ members are absolutely delighted with the performance of the tools. This further demonstrates the club’s environmental commitment and will enable us to keep the green and surrounds in first class condition.”
The grant covered 80% of the cost of the equipment, the remainder coming from club funds.
The club’s leaking flat roof was repaired a couple of years ago, but the leak just moved along to an unrepaired bit. The only real solution is to replace the flat roof. Several quotes were received, the lowest from the previous repairer at £15,000 + VAT.
David applied to Sport England Movement Fund (SEMF) for the maximum £15,000, and was again successful.
SEMF funds projects that match its goal of getting more people active, reducing the number of inactive people and tackling long-standing inequalities. Preventing the club house becoming unusable will ensure that we can continue to welcome the people of Wadebridge and surrounding area for a sport that is ideal for maintaining physical activity in older people, whilst improving mental well-being through a mix of young and old in a friendly social environment. It is also vital for our aims of greater inclusivity by helping disabled people to play at the club.
Work is scheduled for the end of September, just after the season closes.
